# How do solar panels turn sunlight into electricity?

> Solar panels use photovoltaic cells to turn energy from light into electrical energy. Light creates mobile charge carriers in a semiconductor. The cell separates and collects those charges, allowing current to flow through a connected circuit.

1. Light is absorbed
2. Charges are separated
3. A circuit carries current

## Start with the cell, not the whole roof

A panel contains many connected solar cells. In a common silicon cell, absorbed light transfers energy to electrons, creating mobile electrons and the vacancies called holes. The cell’s internal electric field helps separate these charge carriers.

The light supplies energy. The field helps direct charge. Keeping those roles separate makes the mechanism easier to follow.

## What makes it useful electricity?

Contacts collect charge from the cell. With a suitable external circuit connected, current can deliver energy to a load. Cells connect into modules, and modules connect into larger systems.

Panels produce direct current, or DC. An inverter converts DC into the alternating current, or AC, used by a typical home electricity supply. A battery stores energy; it is a separate component, not the part that makes a solar cell generate electricity.

## Does a panel need heat to work?

Photovoltaic generation uses light. It is different from collecting solar heat. A cloudy sky can still provide light, but changing sunlight changes the energy available to the panel. The amount of electricity also depends on the cell and system.

Ask yourself: if the cell’s field helps separate charge, what supplies the energy that keeps the electrical output going? The answer is the incoming light.

## A question worth taking into the lesson

“Where does the electric field inside the cell come from?” is a useful next step. It connects this everyday device to how a semiconductor junction works.

Ask Clevaa to show the cell, distinguish the energy source from the charge-separating field, and trace a circuit through a load. Then explain why light, a working cell and a connected circuit each matter. You can ask for a simpler version of any step.

## Questions and answers

### Does the solar cell create new electrons?

No. It changes the energy and movement of charges in the material. Absorbed light can create mobile electrons and holes; the cell then separates and collects charge.

### Is a solar panel the same as a solar battery?

No. A photovoltaic panel converts light into electrical energy. A battery stores energy for later use.
